Break the Silos — Every Business Must Be a Matrix

Siloed teams, people, and processes are one of the quietest killers of small business agility. When departments don't talk, decisions slow, information dies in handoffs, and customers feel the seams between functions.
Every business — regardless of size — needs to operate as a matrix. That means connecting up, down, and sideways through multiple departments. Information must flow freely across functional boundaries, and every team member should understand how their work impacts the whole.
A matrix mindset isn't about complex org charts or endless meetings. It's about habitually asking three questions before acting: who else needs to know? Who else can help? Who else is affected?
The alternative is predictable: sales blames operations, operations blames finance, and the owner spends all day refereeing instead of leading. Silos turn small teams into fragmented groups that happen to share a payroll system.
Break the silos early. Build connections before you need them. Because in a small business, the speed of information is often the only competitive advantage you have.
